Aside form making a mess at the axle and brakes, It can and will run your differental low on lube and the results will be catastrophic. Be sure to have the shop check the axle for straightness. If it is not straight, the new seal won't hold for long. If gear oil is on the brakes, they must be renewed. I replaced it the first time, and it began leaking again after a few days. The leak was a bit less (not flinging oil all over, just straight drip down from the bottom of the axle seal), but still leaking.If your car is leaking at that side you can pull the axle out and 1st inspect the axle shaft at the seal area for wear/damage. Good time to replace the bearing if any wear is evident. If it is loose it could be a contributor. At first I replaced them with the entire crown automotive axle shafts both left rear and right rear. I cleaned the surfaces and lubed the seals like instructions said.Sometimes dirt/mud will get in that area and cause the seal to leak, and sometimes a clogged diff vent will cause pressure build up in the front diff, forcing a slight leak at an axle seal.
