This isn't the high pitch whine of the starter gear spinning against the ring gear and not engaging. Everything is cranking and not slipping. Jan 8, 2011 · Could be the starter is spinning before the solenoid has fully engaged the starter gear to the flywheel, this the grind until it catches. Hope this helps! Also, just incase you were unaware, banding in the starter while turning it over can release a stuck solenoid to start the car and drive it to wherever you're replacing the alternator.To confirm it is starter related.
