Hose pressure is forcing water up through the engine, not the water pump. May 12, 2009. #1. i have a 1988 johnson 88 spl outboard just did a compression check looking from the back of the boat both top cylinders are at 121 psi the right lower is at 116 the left lower is at 119 is this all normal boat runs great just figured i would do a compression test i hate doing them but please let me know it those sound good. Seems that the fuel primer/enrichment solenoid was shot and was pumping gas into the carb all the time. The idle screw had been turned way up to get the carb to process the extra fuel without choking out. $160 plus labor.
